Your Ruby Red Slippers

I’ve always loved the classic film The Wizard Oz. I am pretty sure it was my earliest teaching of self-empowerment.

As I was cleaning out my closet the other day I found a pair of “ruby red slippers” I had bought five years ago to wear to a meeting with someone I was intimidated by. Wearing those shoes gave me a sense of confidence as well as a physical reminder that I was in control of my own destiny.

My favorite moment of the Wizard of Oz comes at the end of the movie when Glinda, The Good Witch of the North, descends to the ground in a shimmering, rainbow-hued bubble from the sky. As she steps out of the ball of light Dorothy says,

“Oh, will you help me? Can you help me?”

Glinda replies, “You don’t need to be helped any longer. You’ve always had the power to go back to Kansas.”

And then Scarecrow asks, “Then why didn’t you tell her before?”

Glinda simply says, “Because she wouldn’t have believed me. She had to learn it for herself.”

Dorothy, in a moment of self-revelation, realizes that everything she could ever have wanted was right in her own backyard – IF she had desired it enough. (And by now she has relinquished the phony miracle-working power of the Wizard, the magical thinking that someone else would do it for her.)

Dorothy finally sees that she can now rely upon her own power and personality to find her way home.

Today I wanted to remind you that you DO have the power to co-create your life with the Universe.

All the tools are already within you, just click your heels three times and remember “there’s no place like home.” (home being the wisdom of your own heart)
