Who Do You Need to Forgive?

Who lied to you?
Cheated on you?
Stole from you?
Broke your heart?
Tricked you?
Betrayed you?
Humiliated you?
Or, made your life a living hell?

If one, or all, of those things have happened to you, chances are the thought of forgiving the perpetrator sounds dreadful. You were wronged and now continue to be hurt, disappointed, and so much more.

So why should you forgive?

At its essence forgiveness is a willingness to let go of the hurt and give up suffering. It’s a choice to no longer find value in anger or blame and it’s a letting go of the desire to judge another or ourselves because of something that happened in the past.

It’s a choice to feel love rather than to judge or condemn and, it’s often not easy…. and it doesn’t mean that we forget but we do let go…

Forgiveness is something we do for ourselves, so we no longer have to carry negativity. It releases us from the past and allows us to heal and let go and be more at peace in the present moment.

Often, I find that whatever the situation, the first person I need to forgive is myself. I am always my harshest judge and when I’ve done something wrong, and it’s almost always something I never meant to do, I just beat myself up about it…. so self-forgiveness is really important and once I get to that, then, I go and apologize for what has happened.

Thanks to my dear friend Dr. Debi Silber, who is a holistic psychologist and betrayal expert, September 1st is National Forgiveness Day – a day to embrace healing, understanding, and unity by encouraging forgiveness and fostering empathy.

Withholding forgiveness can be debilitating. In fact, not forgiving people prevents people from moving forward in their lives. Studies have shown that forgiveness can lower blood pressure, reduce heart rate, and even enhance the immune system. In fact, forgiveness can also increase mental resilience because it releases negative emotions that disrupt mental health. Plus, practicing forgiveness contributes to an overall sense of well-being and inner peace.
